Family Sponsorship:
Family sponsorship is a program that allows Canadian citizens and permanent residents to sponsor certain family members for permanent residency in Canada. The sponsored family member, known as the “principal applicant,” must meet certain eligibility criteria and be able to pass a medical examination and security checks.
The family members who can be sponsored under the family sponsorship program include:
- Spouses, common-law partners, and conjugal partners
- Dependent children, including adopted children
- Parents and grandparents (through the Parent and Grandparent Program)
- Other eligible relatives in certain circumstances
The sponsor, who must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, must meet certain eligibility requirements and financially support the sponsored family member(s) for a period of time. This includes signing an undertaking to provide for the basic needs of the sponsored family member(s) for the duration of the undertaking which is usually for 3 years.
The sponsorship application process can be complex, and it’s important to ensure that all required documentation is included and that the application is complete and accurate. Processing times can vary, and it’s important to note that sponsorship can be refused or withdrawn if certain conditions are not met.
